GENERAL LAB SAFETY RULES:

  • ALL Lab safety rules will be complied with at ALL times.
  • The Lab staff has the authority to deem that a student, faculty, or staff member is not working safely.
  • The Lab staff has the authority to ask anyone to stop using the equipment and to leave the shop.
  • There must be one staff member present while operating the equipment in the Lab.
  • Report all injuries, no matter how slight, to the Lab Staff immediately.
  • For Serious Injuries call Security at x5000 to request immediate medical assistance.
  • Before starting a machine, always check for correct setup. If possible check to see if the machine is clear by operating it manually.
  • ONLY ONE person is allowed to operate a machine, two+ operators is NOT allowed.
  • No more than two people are allowed to hover around a machine at any given time.
  • Do NOT bring food/snacks into the Machining area.
  • Do NOT distract a person operating a machine.
  • Do NOT make sudden load sounds without notifying the people around you first.
  • Do NOT block aisles, passageways, corridors, fire lanes, or fire and emergency equipment.
  • Do NOT leave tools or work on the machine table even if the machine is not running. Tools or work may fall off and cause a toe or foot injury.
  • If using compressed air to clean a part, point the air hose down and away from yourself and other persons.
  • Never Use a Machine If You Are NOT trained on it. You must attend general safety training and specific training on the machine you intend to use. If you are unfamiliar with a particular tool or instrument, do not use it until you are properly trained on its usage.
  • Never wear gloves or use rags to clean the work piece or any part of a machine that is running. Rotating tools or parts can grab gloves and rags and pull you into the machine.
  • Basic rules for clothing:
    • Loose clothing must NOT be worn when entanglement hazards exist.
    • Open-toed shoes must NOT be worn in the machine shop.
    • Jewelry must NOT be worn.
  • Long hair must be tied back behind your head.
  • Safety glasses, cover goggles, or face shields are required anytime you are in the shop. This includes walking through the shop!
  • Follow safe lifting practices; lift with your leg muscles, not your back. If you do not know how to lift safely, ask a lab staff member to show you.
  • Never operate two or more machines at the same time.
  • Never leave a machine while it is running.
  • Always set the bandsaw guard as close to the work piece as possible.
  • Do not work in the Lab if you are tired, in a hurry, or using any medication which might cause drowsiness.
  • Report any damage to machine or hand tools immediately.
  • Machines must be shut off when cleaning, repairing, or oiling.
  • Before cleaning a machine, remove all sharp objects/cutting tools.
  • Hand protection in the form of suitable gloves should be used for handling hot objects, glass, or sharp-edged items.
  • Never operate a machine while wearing gloves.
  • All machines must be operated with all required guards and shields in place.
  • A brush, hook, or special tool is preferred for removal of chips, shavings, etc. from the work area. Never use your hands.
  • Keep fingers clear from the point of operation of any machine by using special tools or devices, such as, push sticks, hooks, pliers, etc. Do not wipe a moving part with a rag, always use a brush. Never use a rag near moving machinery.
  • Practice cleanliness and orderliness in the Lab areas. Clean your machine and surrounding work area as soon as you are finished.
  • Oily rags must be placed in canisters in front of shop.
  • Keep the floor around machines clean, dry, and free from trip hazards. Do not allow chips to accumulate.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings, sudden abrupt movements may cause you or someone around you to be injured.
  • No horseplay.
  • Think through the entire job before starting.
  • Never carry sharp pointed tools in your pockets.
  • Keep all tools in good condition with regular maintenance.
  • Use the right tool for the job.
  • Examine each tool for damage before use and do not use damaged tools.
  • Always consult shop personal before cutting or grinding any small work pieces.
  • Always wait for handheld power tools to come to a complete stop before laying them down.
  • If you have never machined a particular material before you should ask a lab manager about its machining characteristics and/or any potential health hazards.
  • Keep in mind that cutting oils may irritate your skin, if that is the case, inform the lab manage.
  • Use a dry location with a grounded receptacle when using an electric powered hand tool to prevent a serious electrical shock.
